A design company is using left over apple peel instead of throwing it out when the fruit is used to make juice.A design company has found an ap-peel-ing way of saving the environment. The company use an innovative process to take leftover apple peel and turn it into fashionable bags and shoes for men and women.
Large quantities of apples, grown in Bolzano, northern Italy, are peeled and used to make juice, with the waste being burnt.
However, Hong Kong-based designers ‘Life Green Ltd’ now take the peel to their branch in Milan, Italy, before putting it through an industrial mixing process to turn it into a leather-like material, which they use to make their products.
Life Green’s Head of Design and Production, Henry Hong, said: “For a long time the waste materials were burnt, resulting in the atmosphere and soil being polluted. The purpose of our research and development has been to make leather-like materials that are more environmentally friendly and make everyone’s life greener.”
Once the peel has been collected from the juicing factories in Bolzano, it takes Life Green almost two months to turn it into a leather-like material and then make their bags and shoes.
The stunning finished products look exactly like those made using normal leather-like materials and the company expect them to have a lifespan of up to ten years.
Life Green have produced handbags and laptop bags, available in black, red, green and even pink – with their laptop bags having a USB charger inside for people to use on the go.
“Mankind has made various products which cause serious pollution all over the world. We want to do our best to protect the environment and our earth for the benefit of the next generation.”
They have also made wallets, formal men’s shoes and women’s boots, and they plan to expand their range further to include covers for sofas and chairs. The shoes cost $119 (around £91), while you can get a handbag and wallet for $139 (about £108).
Mr Hong added: “We hope that everybody will support our efforts to protect the environment.
“Now we have bags and shoes made of apple peel, there will be more products which we can use and make our everyday life even closer to nature.”
